In a definitive move to permanently resolve the capital’s chronic traffic congestion and modernize urban traffic management, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the immediate relocation of three major intra-city bus terminals—Sayedabad, Gulistan, and Mohakhali—outside the core boundaries of the Dhaka metropolitan area.

The strategic directive was announced to reporters today by the administrators of the Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations. The briefing followed the conclusion of the third high-level special review meeting on "Traffic Congestion Alleviation and Traffic Management Modernization," held on Monday morning at the Cabinet Division conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Decentralizing Core Urban Transit Hubs

The high-level policy meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, focused on comprehensive structural reforms to the capital's chaotic transportation ecosystem. Senior urban planners and city administrators have long identified the three sprawling terminals as critical bottlenecks. Located at major entry points and dense commercial zones, their intra-city operations frequently paralyze traffic flow deep within the city center.

To counter this, the Prime Minister ordered relevant ministries to rapidly finalize land acquisitions and begin development of modern inter-district terminal facilities at strategic periphery locations on the outskirts of Dhaka. This phased relocation aims to prevent long-haul, inter-district buses from entering the central arterial roads of the capital entirely.

Cabinet Mobilization for Structural Reform

The Prime Minister emphasized that restoring discipline on the roads requires coordinated execution among law enforcement, municipal corporations, and regulatory agencies. The high-level policy session was attended by key cabinet members and security chiefs, including Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam. Senior secretaries, law enforcement officials, and top executives from utility and urban service delivery agencies were also present to coordinate the immediate implementation strategies.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and both city corporations have been tasked with jointly submitting a comprehensive feasibility and timeline roadmap. This layout will establish the exact structural parameters needed to implement the terminal transitions smoothly without disrupting inter-district passenger mobility.
