Information Minister Jahir Uddin Swapan resigns, appointed PM’s political adviser

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has resigned from the cabinet and has been appointed as the prime minister’s political adviser. The Cabinet Division issued separate notifications on Saturday (August 22) confirming his resignation and subsequent appointment.

The first notification said President has accepted Zahir Uddin Swapan’s resignation as minister of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. His resignation will take effect immediately.

In a separate notification, the government said Swapan had been appointed as the prime minister’s political adviser under Rules 3B(1) and 3B(2) of the Rules of Business, 1996. He will enjoy the rank, salary, allowances and other benefits of a minister while serving as adviser.

Meanwhile, Barrister Andalib Rahman Partha has been assigned charge of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the BNP government.

A notification signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani on Friday night (August 21) said the prime minister had made the allocation and reallocation of ministerial responsibilities under Rule 3(4) of the Rules of Business, 1996.
