9th Pay Scale Proposal Approved by Cabinet After 11 Years
The Cabinet has approved the proposal for the country’s ninth pay scale, 11 years after the last formal salary structure was introduced for government employees. The proposal was approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Monday (August 31).
A source from the meeting confirmed the approval to The Daily Campus.
Under the proposed new pay scale, the salary for Grade 1 has been set at Tk 156,000, while the salary for the lowest, Grade 20, has been set at Tk 20,000.
The country has introduced eight pay scales for government employees in the 55 years since independence, with the latest one announced in 2015.
Since then, government employees have received an annual increment at a fixed rate, currently 5 percent. However, no new formal pay structure has been introduced.
A new pay scale is generally considered necessary to address factors including inflation, rising living costs and salary disparities, despite regular annual increments.
