Giant 25kg Pangas from Padma River Sold for BDT 71,000
A massive Pangas fish caught in the Padma River has been sold for BDT 71,000 in Rajbari. The fish, weighing approximately 25 kilograms, was caught by local fishermen early Tuesday (April 28) morning.
The rare catch occurred near the confluence of the Padma River along the Daulatdia-Paturia waterway. Ershad Sheikh, a fisherman from Sattar Member Para in Goalanda Upazila, cast his net at dawn and hauled in the giant fish around 6:30 AM. He brought the catch to the Daulatdia Ghat market, where it weighed in at exactly 25 kg.
The fish was put up for public auction at the warehouse of local trader Rezaul Mondal. Chandu Mollah, a prominent local fish trader, emerged as the highest bidder, purchasing the fish at BDT 2,800 per kilogram for a total of BDT 70,000. Shortly after, a businessman from Kushtia purchased the fish from Chandu Mollah for BDT 71,000, providing the local trader with a profit of BDT 1,000.
Chandu Mollah noted that this is the largest Pangas caught this season, surpassing a previously recorded 18 kg catch. By 12:30 PM on Tuesday, the fish was dispatched to Kushtia via motorcycle for the final buyer.
Rajbari District Fisheries Officer Md. Mahabub Ul Haque commented that such large fish are typically caught during the dry season. He noted that as the river depth increases, catching fish of this scale becomes much more difficult. He described the catch as positive news not only for the fishermen and traders but also for the overall image of the region's aquatic biodiversity.
