Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced a strategic decision to establish two new police training academies in the Jungle Salimpur area of Chattogram. This move is designed to enhance the professional expertise of the police force while simultaneously reclaiming a region long plagued by criminal activity.

The Minister shared this update during a special address to senior police officials on Monday (May 11) at the capital’s Shapla Hall, held as part of the ongoing Police Week 2026.

According to the Home Minister, one of the academies will be dedicated to training elite forces, while the other will serve general police personnel. To ensure the integrity of specialized operations, the government is also preparing separate legislation aimed at increasing transparency and accountability within elite units.

Minister Ahmed emphasized that police training is being aligned with United Nations standards, prioritizing the principle of minimal force and strict adherence to human rights during all operations.

Beyond the new academies, the government plans to modernize central and divisional police hospitals and construct a comprehensive "Police Sports Complex" once suitable land is acquired. To foster public trust and operational transparency, the Minister has ordered an increase in the use of body-worn cameras by field officers. He also stressed the importance of streamlining digital services, such as police clearance certificates and online GD systems, to ensure citizens receive support without unnecessary delays.

The choice of Jungle Salimpur for these institutions is a calculated tactical decision. The remote, hilly terrain in Sitakunda has functioned as a safe haven for land grabbers, armed terrorists, and "hill-eaters" for decades. The area has a violent history, including a recent ambush on January 19, 2026, which resulted in the death of a RAB official and injuries to several others.

Previous attempts by the district administration to conduct eviction drives in 2022 and 2023 also met with armed resistance, leaving numerous officials and journalists injured. By establishing a permanent training base there, the government intends to permanently dismantle these criminal networks and restore law and order to the region.
