Water Poisoning at School Tubewell Leaves 32 Students Hospitalized in Tangail
At least 32 school students fell severely ill and were rushed to the hospital after consuming poisoned water from a tubewell at a school in Nagarpur upazila of Tangail today (June 23). The incident occurred at around 10:30 AM, triggering widespread panic across the educational institution.
According to eyewitnesses, several students began feeling intensely unwell shortly after drinking water from one of the school’s tubewells. They initially exhibited symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and severe abdominal pain. Within a short period, dozens of other students began complaining of the exact same symptoms, causing mass panic among teachers and peers.
Upon receiving the news, school authorities, anxious parents, and members of the local administration rushed to the scene to coordinate emergency rescues. The affected pupils were immediately transported to local healthcare facilities and upazila hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Preliminary investigations strongly suggest that a toxic substance was deliberately introduced into the tubewell.
"Right after 10:15 AM, as the students were heading to their respective classrooms, many of them suddenly started vomiting. We have admitted 32 students to the Nagarpur Upazila Health Complex. Among them, two have been shifted to the Tangail Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The majority of the affected students are girls. We have recovered a polythene bag containing a white, pasty cream right next to the tubewell. I suspect this paste was mixed inside the tubewell, causing severe water poisoning." — Mostafizur Rahman, Acting Headmaster
Upazila health officials confirmed that all hospitalized students are receiving necessary emergency medical care and monitoring. Local administrative officials stated that a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the poisoning.
Water samples from the affected source have been collected and dispatched to public health laboratories for chemical testing. Meanwhile, school authorities have sealed off and temporarily suspended the use of the tubewell to prevent further casualties.
