Bangladesh to Become Trillion-Dollar Economy by 2034: Finance Minister
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has declared that Bangladesh is firmly on track to transform into a trillion-dollar economy by the year 2034. Presenting the national budget proposals for the new 2026–27 fiscal year in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday, the Finance Minister laid out the government's long-term macroeconomic vision, emphasizing that the milestone will be achieved through the precise execution of strategic state plans.
Democratic Dividend and Economic Democratization
Delivering his budget speech, the Finance Minister highlighted a unique socio-economic framework for the country's upcoming growth phase. He stated that through the democratization of the economy, Bangladesh will successfully harness the combined opportunities of both its demographic dividend and longevity dividend to ultimately secure a definitive democratic dividend.
The minister expressed firm confidence that the strategic blueprints and structural policies being set in motion by the current administration will ensure that this trillion-dollar milestone is met within the next eight years, fundamentally shifting the country's standing on the global financial map.
Targeting 6.5% Growth and 10 Strategic Priorities
To stabilize the immediate economic environment and bring relief to the public, the Finance Minister outlined specific macroeconomic targets for the upcoming fiscal cycle. The government aims to reign in inflationary pressures, targeting a reduction in the inflation rate to 7.5 percent, while simultaneously accelerating economic growth to a baseline of 6.5 percent.
The minister emphasized that the administration's primary focus is to restore sustainable discipline across the financial system to directly ease and improve the daily standard of living for ordinary citizens. To systematically achieve these macro targets, the government has engineered the proposed national budget by placing strict focus on ten core priority sectors.
