Ministry hints at potential grade count for new Pay Scale
The government is moving toward the implementation of the 9th National Pay Scale, with a possible allocation of approximately 35,000 crore BDT in the upcoming budget. According to the Ministry of Finance, the number of grades in the new pay structure is expected to remain at 20, maintaining the existing hierarchy.
Sources within the Finance Ministry revealed that the committee formed to re-evaluate the salary structure for government employees has submitted its recommendations. To align with the current cost of living, rising commodity prices, and inflation, the committee suggested that the 9th Pay Scale could be implemented in phases to manage the resulting financial pressure.
A top official from the Ministry of Finance, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, "The Pay Commission recommended keeping the number of grades at 20 for the 9th Pay Scale. This recommendation will not be altered. Salaries will be increased while retaining the current number of grades."
The last pay structure, the 8th Pay Scale, was announced in 2015. After an 11-year gap, the interim government formed a new Pay Commission following the political transition on August 5, 2024. The commission submitted its recommendations prior to the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
