BUET Student Shrishanto's Case: New Section Added, Bail Rejected

A new charge of hurting religious sentiments has been added against Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Shrishanto Roy in a case filed under the Cyber Security Ordinance at Chawk Bazar Police Station. At the same time, his bail plea has been rejected, and he has been remanded to jail. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman's court passed the order on Thursday (23 October) after a hearing.
Dhaka Metropolitan Court Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi said, "The accused was produced before the court. The investigating officer, SI Shahjahan Siraj from Chakbazar Police Station, appeared and applied for the addition of Section 295A of the Penal Code. After the hearing, the court granted the application. However, since the accused's lawyers were not present to seek bail, it was rejected."
On Wednesday (22 October), he was produced before the court, and the investigating officer sought his remand in jail. The court then sent him to jail and fixed Thursday for the bail hearing.
According to the case allegations, Shrishanto Roy, residing in BUET's Ahsan Ullah Hall, used a fake ID 'Weekly Service 923' to post various writings about Muslim women and Islam from 8 June to 7 September this year. These included many obscene, distasteful, and religiously hateful comments. He had been posting such offensive content about Muslim women and Islam under the pseudonym for a long time.
After prolonged efforts, the real identity behind the fake ID was traced to the accused Shrishanto Roy. His obscene comments on Muslim women and religiously hateful remarks have hurt the religious sentiments of BUET students and devout Muslims. On Wednesday, BUET security guard Md. Afghan Hosen filed the case at Chakbazar Police Station as the plaintiff.
