Heartbreaking scenes unfolded at the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of Dhaka University (DU) late Wednesday night when a student received a phone call from her village home informing her that her mother had been brutally murdered.

Prarthana Mojumdar, a student of the Psychology department (2019–20 session), broke down in tears after learning around 11:00 PM that her mother's throat-slit body had been recovered from their bedroom in Bogura. Her piercing cries quickly drew fellow residents together, enveloping the entire residential hall in grief and shock.

University administration provides immediate assistance

Upon receiving the news, university proctorial team members rushed to the hall to support the distraught student.

The Acting Proctor of Dhaka University, Associate Professor Md. Esrafil Prang, confirmed the incident to the media, stating that the university immediately arranged for her safe transit back to her village home.

"As soon as we were informed of the tragedy, we took steps to send the student home," the Acting Proctor said. "Her brother, who is a student at RUET, arrived at the campus. We rented a vehicle at our own expense and dispatched her home with her brother. The entire hall was in tears last night. We will extend any necessary assistance to the family and law enforcement agencies."

Horrific late-night attack inside the household

The murder took place in the Gabtoli Upazila of Bogura district. The deceased woman was identified as Rita Rani Mojumdar, wife of Bidhan Chandra Roy.

According to police and family sources, Rita Rani and her husband went to sleep in separate adjacent rooms at around 10:00 PM on Wednesday after finishing dinner. At around 12:15 AM, Bidhan Chandra woke up to a loud pounding on his bedroom door and simultaneously heard groaning sounds coming from his wife's room.

Upon rushing to her room, he discovered his wife's body lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit. Although he screamed for help, drawing neighbors to the spot, the killers had already fled the scene through the front door, which was found wide open.

Police launch investigation amid rising security concerns

Superintendent of Gabtoli Model Thana, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rakib Hasan, confirmed that law enforcement personnel recovered the body from the bedroom floor overnight and sent it to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. A formal murder case has already been registered at the station.

"Preliminary findings suggest the incident might have stemmed from an internal family dispute," OC Rakib Hasan stated. "However, the exact motive and the identities of those involved are yet to be determined. Police teams are actively working to solve the mystery and apprehend the perpetrators."

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked reactions regarding public safety. Commenting on the murder, Abdul Kader, a former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, expressed grave concern over the incident on his social media account. He questioned the state of national law enforcement, asking how a citizen could be brutally murdered inside their own home and urging authorities to take decisive action to ensure public security.
