DU Chhatra League Leader Among Two Placed on 1-Day Remand
A Dhaka court has granted a one-day remand for Farhan Tanvir Nasif, the Organizing Secretary of the Dhaka University (DU) Sir A.F. Rahman Hall unit of the banned organization Chhatra League, and a microbus driver, Rubel Mia. The duo is accused of planning subversive activities in the capital’s Shahbagh area.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order today, Monday (May 11), following an application by the investigating officer.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Manmath Haider of Shahbagh Police Station, produced the accused in court and sought a seven-day remand for interrogation. While the defense counsel, Tarikul Islam, applied for the cancellation of the remand, the state counsel, Shamsuddoha Suman, argued in favor of the necessity of the remand to unearth the conspiracy.
"The accused have been in custody since May 2. Following the investigation officer's plea today, the court granted a one-day remand for further questioning," confirmed defense lawyer Tarikul Islam.
According to the case statement, Farhan Tanvir Nasif (24) is a student of the 2019-20 academic session in the Department of Linguistics at DU and a resident of Room 209 at Sir A.F. Rahman Hall.
The allegations state that despite the government’s ban on the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Nasif and several others were attempting to keep the organization's activities functional through clandestine meetings and planning acts of sabotage against the state.
The case, filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act by Sub-Inspector Md. Mainul Islam, detailed the following events:
Date & Time: Saturday, May 2, at approximately 6:10 AM.
Location: Near the Raju Memorial Sculpture at TSC, DU.
The Act: Around 20–25 members of the banned organization gathered to propagate anti-state conspiracies. They were reportedly chanting provocative slogans demanding the withdrawal of the ban on the Awami League and BCL and the repeal of what they termed "Black Laws."
The Arrest: Acting on a tip-off, Shahbagh police conducted a raid and caught Nasif and Rubel red-handed with a microbus. Approximately 20–25 other suspects managed to flee the scene upon sensing the police presence.
The investigating officer stated in the remand plea that questioning the accused is essential to identify and apprehend the fugitive accomplices involved in the anti-state plot and to seize the materials used for their propaganda.
