Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has sought a two-day remand for former Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury in a case of attempted murder filed at Lalbagh Police Station.

The application was submitted on Tuesday by the investigating officer, Inspector Mohsin Uddin of DB’s Lalbagh zonal team. A hearing on the remand plea will be held at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was arrested early Tuesday morning (around 4:30 AM) from a residence in Dhanmondi. She was taken to the DB office on Minto Road and later produced before the court at around 1:55 PM in a white microbus. She was kept in the custody of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court.

Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury resigned as Speaker on 2 September 2024 following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. She became the Speaker on 30 April 2013 after the election of former Speaker Abdul Hamid as President. She was the youngest and first female Speaker of Bangladesh and held the position until her resignation.

She faces multiple cases related to violence during the July mass uprising. In one such case, she, along with former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and 15 others, has been accused in the murder of gold worker Muslim Uddin (38), who was shot dead in Rangpur.

The case was filed on 27 August 2024 by the victim’s wife, Dilruba Akter (32), at the Metropolitan Kotwali Amli Court in Rangpur. Tipu Munshi has already been arrested in the case and is in jail. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was elected MP from the Rangpur-6 constituency.
