Former Student Movement Coordinator Stabbed to Death in Cox’s Bazar
A former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activist was stabbed to death by unidentified miscreants in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday night. The victim, identified as Khorshed Alam, was attacked around 10:30 PM in the Kavita Chattar area, located near the beachside tamarisk forest (Jhau Bagan).
Khorshed was the son of Shah Alam from the Yusululghona area of Cox's Bazar Municipality. Following the incident, police took another former coordinator named Tarin into custody for questioning, as she was present with Khorshed during the attack.
According to Tarin, two youths approached them while they were at Kavita Chattar and held Khorshed at knifepoint, demanding his belongings. During the confrontation, the attackers stabbed Khorshed multiple times in his abdomen and legs.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, Shomi Uddin, confirmed that Khorshed was rushed to the emergency department of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead. "The body has been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy. We are conducting raids to identify and arrest those involved," the OC stated.
The news of Khorshed’s death sparked immediate outrage, leading JCD leaders and activists to hold a protest march in Cox’s Bazar city at around 1:15 AM. The protesters gathered at the Old Shahid Minar area, where they slammed local law enforcement for failing to curb the rising influence of "Kishore Gangs" and muggers.
"Khorshed Alam, a frontline warrior of the July movement, was killed in a planned manner," alleged Shahadat Hossain, former president of District JCD. Other speakers, including District NCP spokesperson Khaled Bin Sayeed, issued an ultimatum to the police, demanding the immediate arrest of the killers or the resignation of responsible officers.
Local leaders pointed out that despite the massive influx of tourists in the beach area, there is a visible lack of police patrolling in key spots like Kavita Chattar, making the town increasingly unsafe for residents and visitors alike.
