From 2007 to 2009, DGFI Became the Country’s Main Power Broker, Says Ex Army Chief IKB
Testifying at the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday (8 February), former Army Chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan said the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence became “the main controller of the country” between 2007 and 2009, and that deploying the army across various projects corrupted the force. “Hasina thought a corrupted army would be safe for her,” he told the tribunal.
He added that mixing army officers with civilian police in RAB was a “grave and dangerous decision,” and that after the BDR mutiny RAB faced intense hostility from India and the Awami League.
Bhuiyan’s remarks came as tribunal testimony opened in a mass disappearance and murder case against former army officer Ziaul Ahsan. Bhuiyan is the first witness; he began testifying Sunday afternoon and will continue on Monday (9 February).
Defence lawyer Naznin Nahar said Bhuiyan had maligned the army, adding, “We do not expect this from a former army chief.”
