Jail Killing Day today
Bangladesh marks Jail Killing Day on November 3, commemorating the brutal assassination of four national leaders—Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Captain M Mansur Ali, and AHM Quamruzzaman—inside Dhaka Central Jail in 1975.
These leaders were central to the Liberation War and the Mujibnagar Government, serving as Acting President, Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and Home Minister, respectively, during Bangladesh’s fight for independence.
Their murders took place 11 weeks after the August 15 coup that killed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family. On November 3, army officers linked to the earlier coup entered the jail and shot the four leaders in their cells, targeting the remaining pillars of the nation’s founding leadership.
The day is recognized with mourning programs, discussions, and tributes nationwide, honoring their sacrifices and condemning the act that deepened one of the darkest chapters in Bangladesh’s history.
