Over 50 Seats Remain Vacant at Dhaka University for 2024-25 Academic Year

Dhaka University (DU) has concluded the second and final phase of special migration for the 2024-25 academic year, along with admitting waitlisted candidates to fill vacant seats. Despite these efforts, approximately 60 to 80 seats across various departments remain unoccupied, with no decision yet from the university authorities on whether additional applicants will be considered.
According to university sources, the results of the special migration phase and the allocation of vacant seats to waitlisted candidates were announced on the DU admission portal in late August. Admissions for these seats were processed on August 22 and 25. However, a significant number of seats, particularly in the Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology, remain vacant due to a lack of eligible waitlisted candidates for certain programs. In other departments, eligible candidates exist, but the start of classes has cast uncertainty over whether a new merit list will be issued.
Professor Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, convener of DU’s Online Admission Committee, told The Daily Campus on Thursday, “While some seats remain unfilled, no decision has been taken yet regarding further admissions. The precise number of vacant seats is not yet confirmed, as we are awaiting detailed reports from all departments. That said, this year’s admission rate is satisfactory compared to the past two to three years.”
The presence of vacant seats has raised questions among prospective students hoping for another opportunity to secure admission. With the academic session already underway, the university faces the challenge of balancing its academic schedule with the goal of maximizing enrollment. A final decision on the vacant seats is expected once the administration reviews the departmental reports.
