Kuakata Secondary School in Patuakhali has officially reverted to its original name, dropping the ‘Bangabandhu’ prefix added in 1998 during the Awami League’s tenure. The decision was marked by the unveiling of a new signboard on Sunday, 13 July, in the presence of the school’s managing committee president, Zahirul Islam Miron.

Established in 1994 as Kuakata Secondary School, the institution was renamed Kuakata Bangabandhu Secondary School in 1998 and became MPO-listed in 1999. The move to restore the original name has sparked mixed reactions among locals. Some view it as a step towards political neutrality, while others have expressed discontent over the removal of Bangabandhu’s name. However, most residents believe retaining ‘Kuakata’ strengthens the region’s identity.

The school’s headteacher, Khalilur Rahman, told The Daily Campus, “We aim to keep the institution free from political affiliations, blending tradition with modern education. Kuakata is a globally recognized name, and the school’s identity should reflect that.”

The name change aligns with the Education Ministry’s policy and administrative procedures, though Kalapara Upazila Secondary Education Officer (Acting) Moniruzzaman declined to comment on the matter.

The decision has reignited discussions about balancing regional pride with historical legacies in educational institutions.
