Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Set to Become Bangladesh's Next President

Longtime BNP Secretary General and cabinet minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been chosen as the ruling party's nominee for the country's upcoming presidential election, according to senior party insiders familiar with the leadership's decision.

The development comes as the party formally initiates election preparations. On Sunday morning, BNP Vice Chairman and Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, along with Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, collected nomination papers from the returning officer's office at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon.

The National Standing Committee had earlier entrusted party Chairman Tarique Rahman with the sole authority to select the candidate. Given the BNP's commanding majority in Parliament, its official nominee is virtually assured of securing the position as the country's 23rd president. If Fakhrul stands as the sole validly nominated candidate, he will be declared elected unopposed, bypassing the need for a formal parliamentary vote.

The Election Commission has scheduled the presidential election for August 20, with parliamentary voting slated between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM if contests arise. The office of the president has remained vacant since Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation on July 24, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad currently serving as acting president in accordance with constitutional mandates requiring a replacement election within 90 days.

Fakhrul's anticipated transition to Bangabhaban will open up one of the most vital organizational posts within the BNP for the first time in a decade. Having served as acting secretary-general since 2011 before taking the role permanently in 2016, Fakhrul's departure will require the party to navigate succession adjustments—with leaders like Ruhul Kabir Rizvi mentioned among potential successors—ahead of its anticipated national council.
