WhatsApp to introduce usernames, hide phone numbers for enhanced privacy
WhatsApp is set to roll out a major privacy update in late 2026, allowing users to create unique usernames and conceal their phone numbers during chats and calls, reducing risks from unknown contacts.
The Meta-owned messaging platform, used by millions globally, currently requires phone numbers for connections, exposing users to potential spam or unwanted access. The new feature will let individuals set a custom username—such as @example01—visible to others instead of their number, similar to handles on Instagram or Telegram.
Users can activate a "Hide Phone Number" option in privacy settings, ensuring only the username appears in interactions. Changes to usernames will trigger a system notification in chats, akin to profile photo updates.
Tech analysts note the update may not overhaul the app entirely but will significantly bolster security amid rising cyber threats. Businesses using the WhatsApp Business API must integrate support for usernames and new identifiers by June 2026.
The feature, spotted in recent beta tests, aligns WhatsApp with privacy-focused rivals like Signal. Until its launch, experts advise caution when engaging with strangers on the platform.
