Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today urged the management of telecommunications operator Banglalink to actively consider reducing data costs and making digital services more accessible and affordable for the general public. He made the call during a high-profile courtesy meeting with Augie Fabela, Chairman of VEON—the multinational parent company of Banglalink—at the Prime Minister's office in Sangsad Bhaban this morning.

During the bilateral discussions, the Premier emphasized the state's vision for nationwide digital inclusion, urging the telecom giant to take immediate, practical steps to lower data tariffs. Beyond reducing internet costs, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also requested the Banglalink authorities to formulate affordable smartphone device packages, ensuring that low-income consumers can easily acquire modern handsets to participate in the growing digital economy.

The strategy meeting featured key high-level representatives from both the government cabinet and the international telecom corporation:

  • Faqir Mahbub Anam: Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, Science, and Technology.

  • Rehan Asif Asad: Prime Minister's Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, Science, and Technology.

  • Michiel Soeting: Member of the VEON Board of Directors.

  • Johan Hendrik Martinus Bus: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Banglalink.

The state delegation and corporate leaders concluded the dialogue by exploring collaborative frameworks to build sustainable digital infrastructure. The discussion focused on lowering operational barriers to ensure that advanced mobile connectivity reaches rural communities effectively across Bangladesh.
