9.2 Tonnes of Green Chillies Arrive from India

Amid an unusual surge in domestic market prices caused by heavy monsoon rainfall disrupting local production, imports of raw green chillies from India have officially commenced to help stabilize supply.

The first consignment, carrying 9 tonnes and 200 kilograms of raw green chillies on an Indian truck, entered Bangladesh through the Benapole land port on Tuesday (August 4).

Port sources confirmed that necessary customs and port formalities were processed swiftly upon the truck's arrival. The imported consignment was dispatched to wholesale markets in Dhaka by Tuesday evening. The shipment was imported by Shimu Enterprise, with clearance operations facilitated by C&F agent Shimu Shipping Lines.

Shamim Hossain, Director (Traffic) of Benapole Land Port, stated that port authorities expedited the clearance paperwork in consideration of market demand. He added that several additional trucks loaded with green chillies are currently awaiting entry on the Indian side of the border, which will further boost market supply once cleared.

Shahajan, the importer behind the shipment, mentioned that his net import expense stood at approximately BDT 135 per kilogram. He noted that the produce would be sold in wholesale markets with a minimal profit margin and expressed optimism that prices would drop rapidly as import volumes increase.

However, the importer raised concerns over administrative delays, alleging that customs-related complications and clearance procedural hassles increase duty burdens and incidental expenses. These additional costs elevate overall import expenditures, placing traders at risk of financial losses. He urged authorities to streamline clearance procedures to make imports more cost-effective.

Meanwhile, green chillies were retailed at BDT 280 per kilogram in Benapole's local markets on Tuesday, reflecting a slight decline compared to previous days. Local traders expect retail prices to ease further to a tolerable level if regular imports from India continue uninterrupted.
