Strong 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Eastern Malaysia's Sabah Coast
A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck early Monday off the coast of Sabah state in eastern Malaysia on Borneo island, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicentre was located less than 100 km northeast of the state capital Kota Kinabalu, at a depth of 619.8 km. The quake hit at 12:57 am local time (16:57 GMT Sunday).
The USGS assessed the likelihood of casualties or significant damage as low due to the great depth. The US Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any tsunami alert, stating that the depth made tsunami activity unlikely.
Malaysia’s Meteorological Department measured the quake at 6.8 magnitude and said it would continue to monitor the situation closely. Tremors were felt along Sabah’s west coast and in several parts of neighbouring Sarawak state.
No immediate reports of casualties, major damage, or injuries have emerged.
