5.3-magnitude quake strikes Myanmar coast hours after Bangladesh tremors
A moderate 5.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar's coastal waters off the Andaman Sea this morning, just hours after multiple tremors rattled Bangladesh.
The quake struck at 10:39am Bangladesh time on Sunday (23 November), with its epicentre about 267 km west-southwest of Dawei city in Myanmar, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km and was felt in coastal areas, but no immediate reports of casualties or damage have emerged.
Aftermath in Bangladesh The event came after a deadly 5.7-magnitude quake on Friday (21 November) killed at least 10 people in Narsingdi, Dhaka and Narayanganj, injuring hundreds more. Three mild aftershocks followed on Saturday, including a 3.3-magnitude tremor in Narsingdi's Palash area.
BMD officials noted the Myanmar quake was too distant to be felt in Bangladesh, but it underscores ongoing seismic activity in the Indo-Burman subduction zone.
Experts warn of possible aftershocks in Bangladesh for the next 48–72 hours, urging residents to avoid damaged structures.
