Bhutanese PM Tobgay arrives in Dhaka today on three-day state visit
Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay will arrive in Dhaka today Saturday (22 November) on a three-day state visit, invited by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus during the UN General Assembly in September. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties through enhanced connectivity, trade, and investment.
Bangladesh will accord a red-carpet welcome at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, where Prof Yunus will receive him. The Bhutanese leader regards the Chief Adviser as his "role model," affectionately calling him "My Professor."
Upon arrival, Tobgay will hold a courtesy call with Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain in the afternoon, followed by a one-on-one meeting with Prof Yunus. A bilateral delegation-level meeting will follow, with prospects of signing three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in key sectors.
During the visit, Tobgay will also meet President Mohammed Shahabuddin and interact with the Bhutanese community in Bangladesh. Proposals for collaboration in health, education, economic development, agriculture, tourism, and sports are expected, along with discussions on reducing travel taxes for Bangladeshis and importing Bhutanese hydropower via a trilateral agreement.
The visit coincides with Bhutan's first trial transit of goods through Bangladesh under the traffic-in-transit agreement—a 15-tonne consignment from Chattogram Port to Burimari land port onward to Bhutan via India.
Tobgay is scheduled to depart Dhaka for Thimphu on Monday (25 November), with Foreign Affairs Adviser seeing him off at the airport.
