The consumer-level price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder has been slashed by BDT 357, fixing the new retail price at BDT 1,528. Simultaneously, the price of autogas used for vehicles has been reduced to BDT 74.40 per litre from the previous BDT 86.93.

Jalal Ahmed, Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), announced the newly adjusted rates during a press conference on Thursday afternoon (July 2).

The new rates will come into effect from 6:00 PM this evening. According to BERC, the latest price reduction is attributed to a decline in LPG prices and lower freight charges in the international market.

Earlier on April 19, the price of a 12kg cylinder was hiked by BDT 212 to BDT 1,940, just 17 days after it had been increased by BDT 387 to BDT 1,727 on April 2. This meant that the price of 12kg LPG rose by a total of BDT 599 in two phases. Following that surge, the price was reduced in June to BDT 1,885 from BDT 1,940, while the autogas price was cut to BDT 86.93 per litre from BDT 89.50.

The LPG sector has experienced unprecedented volatility since December 2025, with retail sellers reportedly charging arbitrary rates. Although the official rate was fixed at BDT 1,341 in March, reports indicated that 12kg cylinders were being sold across retail markets for between BDT 1,800 and BDT 2,000.

Notably, BERC first began declaring regulatory retail prices for LPG on April 12, 2021. The regulator announced at the time that the base price would be adjusted monthly in accordance with the Saudi Aramco Contract Price (CP). Meanwhile, any revisions to the commissions of importers, dealers, and retailers, alongside freight rates, are finalized through public hearings. Since that declaration, BERC has been adjusting and announcing new LPG rates on a monthly basis.
