Drilling has begun for the country’s first deep gas well at the Titas Gas Field in Brahmanbaria. Upon completion, the well is expected to add around 15 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid, according to officials.

The drilling work was inaugurated on Sunday (19 April) at noon in the Budhal area of Sadar upazila by AKM Mizanur Rahman, Director (Finance) of Petrobangla.

According to sources, Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL), which operates the Titas Gas Field, is currently supplying around 325 million cubic feet of gas daily from its 22 wells. However, due to long-term extraction, pressure and reserves in the field have declined, leading to reduced production.

To explore new gas sources, a 3D seismic survey project was undertaken. Under this project, two deep exploration wells are being drilled in the Titas and Bakhrabad gas fields.

The new well at Titas will be drilled to a depth of approximately 5,600 metres and is expected to take around seven months to complete. The work is being carried out by the Chinese contractor company CCDCI.

BGFCL Managing Director Md. Abdul Jalil Pramanik said new wells are being drilled and old wells are being worked over to increase production in Titas and other gas fields. If the deep exploration wells in Titas and Bakhrabad are successful, it will be a milestone for the country’s energy sector.

Petrobangla Director said the government has a plan to drill 50 wells this year to ensure the country’s energy security. In the current international context of energy crisis, domestic resource exploration has become critically important.

Senior officials of BGFCL and concerned project officials were present at the inauguration ceremony.
