DU Student Expelled Over Religious Blasphemy, Probes Two More Amid New Complaint
Dhaka University (DU) has expelled one student for alleged blasphemy and false statements. Investigations are ongoing against two others in the same case, with decisions expected in a couple of days. Additionally, the proctor's office has received a new complaint against another student.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the matter to The Daily Campus today, saying, "Recent incidents have raised concerns. The university will issue a warning to students. We expelled one for six months. He will be called for a statement. The probe report against the other two has been submitted; action will be taken soon."
The expelled student, Abrar Faiyaj from the 2021–2022 Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) batch, was targeted for comments insulting Islam and Hinduism, and sexually suggestive remarks towards hijab-wearing women, linked to BUET student Shrishant Roy, currently jailed for rape and cyber security ordinance violations.
The other accused are Mehtajur Rahman and Tasnia Islam from IBA's BBA-30 batch. Abrar was expelled on Wednesday (October 29) via a letter signed by Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed, citing complaints from CSE students on October 26. A three-member fact-finding committee was formed, recommending expulsion for six months, approved by the vice chancellor.
Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, "We take immediate action on such complaints. Sometimes it involves lengthy procedures, but I try to resolve quickly within my authority."
Additionally, a new complaint has surfaced against a physics department student for insulting Sanatan Dharma. Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, "We'll investigate and take action. Such complaints are probed promptly."
