A 24-year-old university student was found hanging in her room in Demrapara area under Pubail Police Station in Gazipur Metropolitan City on Monday night (August 31). Family members took her to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

The deceased was identified as Prapti Mallik Puja, daughter of Gopal Chandra Mallik of Demrapara. She was a 10th-semester student of the Fashion Designing Department at Uttara University. Family sources said Puja had been married to Shishir Chandra Roy of Rajendrapur in Sreepur about two years ago through a family-arranged marriage. The couple had no children.

According to the family, Puja came to her parents’ home with her brother on August 25. She went to the university on Monday morning and returned home in the evening. After taking a shower, she stayed in her room.

At around 8:30pm, family members became suspicious after receiving no response despite repeatedly calling her. Her brother then entered the room through the ceiling of an adjoining room and found Puja with an orna wrapped around her neck and tied to the ceiling fan.

The family opened the door, rescued her and took her to the hospital, where the attending doctor declared her dead. Pubail Police Station Investigation Officer Abu Bakkar Siddique said police went to the hospital and prepared an inquest report. “The family has mentioned family-related frustration. Work is underway to determine the actual cause of death,” he said.
