Prof Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane Appointed as New Pro-VC of DU
Professor Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane from the Department of Botany has been appointed as the new Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of Dhaka University (DU). The appointment was confirmed through a notification issued by the Ministry of Education today, Thursday (May 7).
According to the proclamation, Professor Alfasane will serve in this high-ranking administrative role under four specific conditions approved by the President and Chancellor of the university in accordance with Article 13(1) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973.
The official notification specifies that the term of his appointment will be four years from the date of his joining. During this period, he will receive salary and allowances equivalent to his current position and will be entitled to all position-related benefits as per the existing rules.
A key requirement of the role is that he must reside on the university campus full-time. He is tasked with exercising the powers and performing the duties defined by the university’s statutes and laws, as well as those assigned by the Vice-Chancellor. The President and Chancellor reserve the right to revoke this appointment at any time if deemed necessary.
Professor Alfasane brings a distinguished academic and research background to the administration, having served as a teacher and researcher at Dhaka University for over two and a half decades. He consistently excelled in his academic career, securing the first position in both his B.Sc (Honors) and M.Sc (Thesis) examinations from the Department of Botany at DU before earning his Ph.D.
His dedication to science has earned him titles such as "Associate Fellow" of the Bangladesh Academy of Science and "Capstone Fellow" of the National Defence College. Currently, he serves as the Chief Editor of the Bangladesh Journal of Plant Taxonomy, a research journal of international repute.
His scientific contributions are globally recognized, particularly for the discovery of 16 new species of algae, a new lotus species, and a carnivorous plant. Beyond taxonomy, his work in environmental biotechnology includes the development of algae-based water purification nano-filters, supercapacitors, and biosensors.
With over 100 research articles and six international books to his name, he has also mentored four Ph.D. researchers and more than 40 M.Sc. students. In addition to his scientific pursuits, he has held significant leadership roles, including former Secretary of the Dhaka University Club, Advisor to the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, and Joint Secretary General of the University Teachers Association of Bangladesh (UTAB). He remains actively involved with over 40 social and research-oriented organizations.
