DU Student Commits Suicide; Teacher and Classmate Taken into Custody, Suicide Note Recovered
A student of Dhaka University (DU) has reportedly died by suicide at her residence in the capital’s Badda area. Following the incident, police have taken a teacher and a classmate into custody for questioning. The victim, identified as Munira Mahzabin Mimo, was a student of the 2019-20 academic session, currently enrolled in Master’s program in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies.
The Chairperson of the department, Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma, and other university officials confirmed the development on Sunday (April 26) afternoon. According to the Chairperson, the police action was based on information and digital evidence recovered from the student's mobile phone and suicide notes found at the scene.
The Chairperson informed The Daily Campus that the department received the news of the suicide between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. Upon visiting the victim's home, teachers learned of specific instructions and names mentioned in her final notes.
The suicide notes reportedly mentioned a faculty member, referred to as "Sudip Sir," stating that he should be given BDT 50,000. The notes also contained messages such as "Hanee and Sudip Sir, stay well" and instructions to return gifts previously given by the teacher. Based on these findings and related data on her phone, the police took the teacher and a close female friend of the victim into custody for interrogation.

Chairperson Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma expressed deep shock over the sudden loss of a promising student. "We cannot accept this sudden death. We want justice for what has happened. We demand a fair and thorough investigation into the matter," she stated, adding that the case is now entirely under police jurisdiction.
The victim lived with her parents in Badda, and her body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for an autopsy.
When contacted, the duty officer at Shahbagh Police Station acknowledged hearing about the detentions but could not provide specific details regarding the ongoing interrogation or the formal charges. The police are expected to provide a detailed briefing once the primary questioning and forensic analysis of the mobile phone are complete.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the university campus, with students and faculty alike calling for transparency and accountability as the investigation unfolds.
