Huge Budgets for Universities, but None for Research: Education Minister
Education and Primary & Mass Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haq Milon has expressed disappointment over the lack of financial priority given to academic research, noting that while universities receive substantial overall budgets, the allocation for research remains negligible.
The Minister shared these observations while attending a workshop organized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Sunday (April 26) to mark World Intellectual Property Day 2026. The event, held at the UGC Auditorium in Agargaon, focused on accelerating innovation and protecting the rights of innovators in Bangladesh.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Dr. Milton questioned the current fiscal strategies of higher education institutions. "Have we truly reflected on the nature of the budgets being allocated for research?" he asked, stressing that a nation’s progress is tied to its innovative output. He urged university authorities and policymakers to rethink how funds are distributed to ensure that research and development activities receive the necessary impetus.
The workshop was presided over by UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed. The event brought together a wide array of academic leaders, including UGC members, Vice-Chancellors from various universities, and directors of Institutional Quality Assurance Cells (IQAC). Senior officials from the Ministry of Education and other relevant stakeholders were also present to discuss the legal and operational frameworks needed to safeguard intellectual property.
The Minister's remarks come at a time when the government is pushing for academic reforms to align the country’s education system with global standards of innovation and excellence.
