Dhaka University (DU) has been closed indefinitely following the recent earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, with all classes and exams suspended until 6 December 2025. Students have been directed to vacate the residential halls by 5:00pm today Sunday (23 November).

The decision was announced in a circular signed by Acting Director (Public Relations) Mohammad Rafiqul Islam on Saturday night.

The university Syndicate held an emergency virtual meeting today, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, attended by Syndicate members. Also present were the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Principal of Dhaka Medical College, Acting Director of Planning and Development Office, Acting Controller of Examinations, and Acting Chief Engineer.

The meeting considered the physical and mental trauma inflicted on students by the recent earthquake and aftershocks, prioritising their overall safety. Opinions from BUET experts, the Planning and Development Office director, and the chief engineer were analysed. They recommended a thorough inspection of all residential halls to assess risks and carry out necessary repairs. To facilitate this, the halls must be vacated.

The Syndicate decided to keep all classes and exams suspended until 6 December 2025 and vacate the halls. Principals were requested to make arrangements for students to leave by 5:00pm tomorrow.

It may be mentioned that the university offices will remain open as usual.
