NSU Launches ‘Frontiers in Environmental Thought’ Distinguished Lecture Series
North South University’s (NSU) Department of Environmental Science and Management (ESM), in collaboration with the Earth Club, has officially inaugurated its distinguished lecture series, titled Frontiers in Environmental Thought. This newly launched academic initiative aims to foster robust intellectual exchange and advance contemporary discourse surrounding environmental science, education, and global sustainability.
The inaugural session of the lecture series was held today, Thursday (July 9), from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at AUDI 801 on the university campus. The event was graced by Professor Nasar U. Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor of North South University, and Professor Dr. Dipak Kumar Mitra, Dean of the School of Health and Life Sciences (SHLS). Their presence underscored the university's enduring commitment to academic excellence, research integration, and collaborative scholarship.
The keynote address for the inaugural session, titled "Frontier of Environmental Education: Road Less Travelled," was delivered by Professor Emeritus A. T. M. Nurul Amin, one of the country's most respected environmental scholars.
During his presentation, Professor Amin extensively reflected on the historical evolution of environmental education, its rapidly growing significance in addressing escalating global ecological crises, and the strategic opportunities and challenges lying ahead. Drawing from his decades of academic leadership and pioneer research, he shared critical insights into how structured environmental education can guide sustainable development goals and shape future generations of industry-ready environmental professionals.
The premier event drew a large audience, bringing together faculty members, active researchers, students, environmental alumni, and representatives from the broader academic community.
Beyond celebrating the launch of this flagship series, the occasion reaffirmed the ESM Department's long-standing dedication to pioneering environmental literacy and creating institutional spaces for students to engage directly with thought leaders whose work continues to shape international environmental paradigms.
Since its inception in 1994, the Department of Environmental Science and Management at NSU has remained focused on maintaining excellence across teaching and interdisciplinary research. Organizers from the ESM Department and the Earth Club expressed their sincere appreciation to the participants for making the opening session a success, noting that the enthusiasm generated sets an inspiring foundation for future iterations of the series.
