The Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration detained two visiting students from BRAC University for public consumption of marijuana on the campus premises. A mobile court subsequently sentenced both individuals to two days of simple imprisonment alongside a financial penalty of Taka 500 each.
The disciplinary action took place near the university's swimming pool area on Friday (May 22) at approximately 2:00 PM. Apprehended red-handed during campus visit
According to institutional sources, the duo entered the Jahangirnagar University perimeter upon receiving an invitation from two students of the 51st batch of JU’s Department of Marketing.
Security personnel apprehended the visiting students red-handed while they were actively consuming marijuana near the swimming pool infrastructure. Following their detention, the university's proctorial body formally processed the students and handed them over to the local police custody.
Mobile court exacts penal measures
Following their transfer to law enforcement, an executive magistrate convened a mobile court on-site to evaluate the incident under the strict statutory provisions of the Narcotics Control Act. Upon reviewing the circumstantial evidence and testimonies, the court penalized each student with a two-day prison sentence without labor, supplemented by a fine of Taka 500.
Speaking to multiple media outlets regarding the law enforcement operation, the Jahangirnagar University administration reiterated its commitment to campus safety. Officials emphasized that routine anti-narcotics drives are being systematically carried out across the university perimeter to eliminate drug abuse and unauthorized activities, maintaining a strict zero-tolerance policy against any such violations.
