NSU Hosts Closing Ceremony for First Cohort of Creative Writing Course
North South University’s (NSU) Department of English and Modern Languages (DEML) hosted the closing ceremony for its inaugural Certificate Course in Creative Writing on April 25, 2026. The event, executed through the collaborative efforts of DEML faculty and students, celebrated the successful completion of the course by nineteen participants.
The ceremony was attended by Professor Nasar U. Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor of NSU; Professor Abdur Rob Khan, Treasurer; and Dr. Nazia Manzoor, Chair of DEML, alongside distinguished faculty members from various departments. Dr. Nazia Manzoor opened the event with an introductory speech, expressing her appreciation for the instructors who contributed to the program's success.
The highlight of the event featured poetry recitations by the course participants and students from previous slam poetry events hosted by the department. Each performance showcased the creativity and skills refined during the workshop-style sessions. In a notable moment, the Pro-Vice Chancellor shared an original poem he had written about his mother in honor of International Mother Language Day.
The inaugural cohort, which ran from February 27 to April 24, focused on developing proficiencies in short stories and poetry. The curriculum was delivered through intensive workshops conducted by NSU faculty, with special guest sessions from award-winning British-Bangladeshi novelist Zia Haider Rahman and eminent translator and critic Professor Kaiser Hamidul Haq.
The ceremony concluded with the distribution of completion certificates to all participants. Following the success of this first session, DEML has announced that the next iteration of the Creative Writing Certificate Course is scheduled to begin in Summer 2026.
