Millions of people from across Bangladesh gathered today to offer namaz-e-janaza for BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, the three-time former Prime Minister and enduring political icon of the nation.

The funeral prayer was held this afternoon at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital. Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Khatib Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek led the janaza, while BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan read out a brief biography of Begum Zia.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, foreign dignitaries, advisers of the interim government, leaders from various political parties, and senior government and military officials joined the massive congregation.

Mourners from all walks of life participated in the prayers, seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of Begum Zia. Many burst into tears, overwhelmed by emotion as they bid farewell to their beloved leader.

The area around the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament Building) witnessed an unprecedented wave of grief today. Millions converged on Manik Mia Avenue to pay their final tributes.

From Tuesday night onwards, all major roads leading to Manik Mia Avenue were packed as people travelled from every corner of the country by bus, train, launch, metro rail, and other means of transport. Scenes of profound sorrow were visible everywhere, with thousands openly weeping.

Begum Zia will be laid to eternal rest beside her husband, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, in the city with full state honours. Due to the elaborate state funeral ceremony, the general public will not be allowed during the burial.

Begum Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, breathed her last at 6:00 am on Tuesday at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
