Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away at 92
Asha Bhosle, one of the greatest and most versatile voices in the history of Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 92.
The iconic singer was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday after suffering cardiac and respiratory issues. She was in critical condition and was shifted to the ICU. She breathed her last on Sunday afternoon.
Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news. The last rites will be performed tomorrow.
A Legendary Career
Asha Bhosle was a dominant force in Bollywood for over seven decades. She began her career at the age of nine and recorded her first song in 1943. Known for her incredible range, she sang everything from cabaret and item numbers to ghazals, bhajans, and classical-based songs.
She was a seven-time Filmfare Award winner for Best Female Playback Singer and received two National Film Awards — for Dil Cheez Kya Hai (Umrao Jaan) and Mera Kuch Saamaan (Ijaazat).
Her sister, the late Lata Mangeshkar, was her only true rival in terms of popularity and influence in Hindi film music.
Personal Life
Asha married Ganpatrao Bhosle at the age of 16 against her family’s wishes. The marriage ended in separation in 1960. In 1980, she married composer R.D. Burman. She is survived by her children and granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, who remained close to her in her final years.
Her passing marks the end of an era in Indian music.
