The University of Canberra, Australia, has expressed a keen interest in establishing a branch campus in Bangladesh under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army. An eight-member high-level delegation shared this proposal during a courtesy meeting with University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed on May 4, 2026.
The delegation was led by Major General Md. Hasan Uz Zaman, Chairman of the Jolshiri Abashon Project. Key representatives from the University of Canberra included Vice-Chancellor and President Professor the Honorable Bill Shorten, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Lincoln, and Chief Global Engagement Officer Dr. Fiona Richards. Major General Mohammad Kamrul Hasan and other senior officials from the Bangladesh Armed Forces and educational sectors were also in attendance.
Focus on World-Class Education and Emerging Tech
During the meeting, both parties emphasized the importance of future-oriented education. The delegation highlighted that incorporating cutting-edge subjects such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, and Machine Learning into the curriculum would empower Bangladeshi students with international-standard skills, making them highly competitive in the global job market.
Professor Bill Shorten noted that a branch campus would provide local students with direct access to international education while maintaining the rigorous academic and administrative standards for which the University of Canberra is renowned. Major General Md. Hasan Uz Zaman added that the initiative would significantly enhance professional skill development within the country.
UGC’s Commitment to Internationalization
UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed welcomed the initiative, stating that partnerships with internationally acclaimed universities are vital for elevating the quality of higher education and research in Bangladesh. He remarked that such transnational education projects would strengthen Bangladesh’s connection to the global education system and foster a knowledge-based economy.
The Chairman assured the delegation of full cooperation from the UGC, noting that the commission is actively working toward the internationalization of higher education within existing legal frameworks. The meeting concluded with discussions on potential academic exchanges, research collaborations, and expanded skill development programs, marking a significant step toward the expansion of global higher education within Bangladesh.
