TIN Certificate Likely to be Made Mandatory for Opening Bank Accounts
The government has proposed making a Tax Identification Number (TIN) certificate a mandatory requirement for opening bank accounts in the national budget for the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the measure while presenting the national budget for FY27 in parliament today.
The requirement will apply to general account openings, though the government has outlined certain exceptions to protect specific groups of citizens.
"I propose that, except for student accounts, no-frills accounts, and individuals exempted from obtaining a TIN through a gazette notification issued by the NBR, any person opening a bank account must submit a TIN certificate." — Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Finance Minister
According to the speech, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) will utilize official gazette notifications to specify any further individuals who are completely exempt from obtaining a TIN for this financial process.
