A severe cold wave has intensified across Bangladesh, with Chuadanga registering the season's lowest temperature of 6.9°C at 9:00 am on Wednesday, according to Altaf Hossain, observer at the Chuadanga Meteorological Department office.

The western district has been blanketed in thick fog since dusk, with sunlight mostly obscured on most days. Wednesday morning saw dense mist enveloping the surroundings once again. Although the sun eventually broke through, it offered little warmth, while a biting northern wind further deepened the chill.

Altaf Hossain stated: "This situation may persist for a couple of days."

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature was 7.5°C under a moderate cold wave.

The bone-chilling cold has worsened hardships for low-income groups, whose daily earnings have dropped sharply due to limited outdoor work.

Farmers are increasingly concerned about potential crop damage.

Kashem Ali from Hazrahati village in Sadar Upazila described the struggle: “We are in great difficulty. To work in the fields, you have to get mud and water, which is as cold as ice. But there is no other way, we have to work despite the hardship.”

Hospitals are witnessing a surge in winter-related illnesses, including diarrhoea, respiratory distress, and pneumonia.

Dr Afrina Islam, Resident Medical Officer at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, said: “The number of diarrhoea patients has increased due to the severe cold. Special care must be taken for children during this time. They must not be allowed to catch a cold under any circumstances.”

She advised the public to consume freshly cooked food and seek immediate medical attention if anyone falls ill.
