Bangladesh has recorded the highest remittance inflow in its history, with non-resident Bangladeshis sending USD 903.49 million (approximately Tk 11,021 crore) during the first 10 days of May 2025, according to a Bangladesh Bank report released on Monday, May 12.

This figure marks a significant milestone in the country's foreign currency earnings and signals renewed momentum in remittance inflows, which are vital to Bangladesh’s economy.

The central bank's updated data indicates that USD 903.49 million was remitted from May 1 to May 10 alone — the highest ever recorded within such a short timeframe.

Breaking down the numbers:

  • State-owned banks accounted for USD 279 million
  • Specialised banks facilitated USD 98.15 million
  • Private commercial banks processed USD 533.65 million
  • Foreign bank branches operating in Bangladesh handled USD 1.61 million

Additionally, from May 4 to May 10, Bangladesh received USD 735 million in remittance — a 22.3% increase compared to the USD 601 million received during the same period last year.

The previous highest annual remittance record was set in the 2020–21 fiscal year, when inflows reached USD 24.77 billion, buoyed by pandemic-driven money transfers and government incentives.

Experts suggest the recent surge could be attributed to an uptick in overseas employment, improved official remittance channels, and favorable exchange rate policies implemented by the Bangladesh Bank.

Remittance, a key pillar of the national economy, plays a crucial role in supporting the country's foreign currency reserves and financing the current account. Economists view this new record as a positive sign amid broader efforts to stabilize macroeconomic fundamentals.
