NBR Launches Email OTP System for Bangladeshi Expatriate Taxpayers
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a new facility allowing Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad to receive One-Time Passwords (OTPs) via email instead of mobile phones.
The initiative addresses a major issue faced by expatriates who initially registered for the e-return system using biometric-verified Bangladeshi mobile numbers but can no longer access those numbers while overseas, the NBR said in a press release on Tuesday.
Under the new arrangement, expatriate taxpayers can complete special registration and reset passwords using OTPs sent to their verified email addresses. This removes a significant barrier to accessing the online tax filing platform from abroad.
To get their email verified, expatriates must email the NBR with:
- Copies of passport
- National ID card
- Visa page
- Overseas address
- Foreign mobile or telephone number
- Date of last departure from Bangladesh
The NBR will review and verify the submitted information. Once approved, taxpayers can use email-based OTPs for password resets, registration, and other e-return activities.
The NBR highlighted the growing popularity of the online filing system due to its convenience and efficiency. In the 2025-26 tax year, nearly 3.9 million income tax returns have already been submitted electronically.
