Two University Students Die Within Two Hours
Two female students from government universities tragically lost their lives within a two-hour gap on Monday (16 March). The incidents have cast a shadow of grief across the campuses.
Umme Habiba Riju (Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University) Riju, a student of the Film and Media Studies department, died after falling from the roof of her residence in the afternoon. She completed her graduation from the 2018-19 session. She is survived by a son and a daughter. Her husband, Md. Rashidul Islam, is a veterinary doctor.
Head of the Film and Media Studies department, Dr. Zillur Rahman Paul, said: “We are deeply shocked by the untimely death of our student Riju. We are trying to contact her family. May Almighty Allah grant her Jannat.”
Deepa Das (Gopalganj Science and Technology University – GSTU) Deepa Das, a student of the Bangla department (2020-21 session), was found hanging at her home in Gopalganj town’s Ghanapara area around 4:00 p.m. Her classmates believe domestic disputes with her husband may have led to suicide.
Classmate Jervas Biswas said: “We still don’t know the full details of her suicide. But we have learned that she took her life in the afternoon after a quarrel with her husband due to marital issues. We are deeply shocked.”
Another classmate Rifat Islam added: “Deepa was extremely gentle, talented, and excellent in studies. We have learned that marital conflict and arguments with her husband led to this tragedy. The Bangla department family is deeply saddened.”
Attempts to contact Deepa’s family members and her husband by phone were unsuccessful.
Both incidents have left the university communities in mourning.
