5 Million Rupee Fine on Each Pakistani Players After T20 World Cup Failure
Pakistan's disappointing performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup, where the team crashed out after the Super Eight stage, has triggered widespread criticism and strong reactions. In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed disciplinary action on the players. Each member of the squad has been fined 5 million Pakistani rupees for failing to reach the semi-finals, according to a report by Express Tribune.
The Green Shirts played six matches in total across the group stage and Super Eight. They won against Namibia and the Netherlands in the group stage but could not overcome India in a crucial match. In the Super Eight, rain washed out their game against New Zealand, followed by a loss to England that effectively eliminated them. In their final match against hosts Sri Lanka, they failed to chase down a modest 147-run target.
The Express Tribune report states that the fine decision was taken immediately after the 61-run defeat to India on 15 February. Sources say PCB officials clearly informed the players that financial benefits would now be strictly performance-based.
The fine of 5 million rupees per player has already been imposed. The players were informed of the decision right after the loss to India.
The report also notes that Pakistani national cricketers earn substantial amounts annually. A Category A player receives a monthly salary of 4.5 million rupees plus 2.075 million rupees from the ICC revenue share. Category B players get 3 million rupees monthly plus 1.5525 million from ICC. Category C players receive 1 million rupees monthly plus 1.035 million from ICC, while Category D players get 750,000 rupees monthly plus 517,500 from ICC. Additional match fees are paid for squad inclusion.
Meanwhile, criticism of the team's World Cup performance continues. Former captain Javed Miandad said Pakistan has once again failed to prove itself in major tournaments. In his view, Pakistan is falling behind in modern T20 cricket.
Former captain Mohammad Yousuf believes that despite being given long opportunities, some players have failed to meet expectations in big events. It is time to learn from mistakes and move forward.
Senior players including former captain Babar Azam, current captain Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Mohammad Nawaz are facing heavy scrutiny. There are also rumours that Salman Agha may step down from captaincy.
