Norwegian State Secretary Meets Chief Adviser, Commits to Democracy and Rights Support

On 21 May 2025, Norway’s State Secretary for International Development, Stine Renate Håheim, wrapped up a two-day visit to Bangladesh, pledging support for the country’s democratic transition, human rights, environmental sustainability, and the Rohingya crisis.
On 20 May, Håheim met Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, discussing democratic restoration, human rights, bilateral trade, investment, and green energy transitions. They also addressed humanitarian crises in Palestine and Ukraine. That day, she met Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, focusing on Norway’s backing for renewable energy and sustainable development. Håheim highlighted Norwegian firms’ efforts to cut carbon emissions and stressed the need for an efficient green energy plan and wider renewable access in Bangladesh’s grid. Talks also covered reducing plastic pollution and boosting youth environmental awareness.
Håheim visited the Youth Environment and Development Organization, a youth-led group supported by Plan International Bangladesh, engaging with leaders tackling child marriage, promoting sexual and reproductive health rights, and advancing environmental advocacy. On 21 May, she visited Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, commending Bangladesh’s hospitality toward over one million refugees and reaffirming Norway’s diplomatic and humanitarian support.
Norway reiterated its commitment to Bangladesh’s democratic governance, inclusive development, and sustainable future.
