The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is on the verge of a historic third consecutive term in Assam as vote counting for the 2026 Assembly Elections progresses. Early trends and exit poll data suggest a landslide victory for the alliance, with the BJP nearing the 100-seat mark in the 126-member assembly. As counting began at 8:00 AM across 40 centers today, Monday (May 4), the political landscape appears heavily tilted in favor of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is maintaining a strong lead in his traditional stronghold of Jalukbari, eyeing a personal hat-trick. In a major upset for the opposition, State Congress Chief Gaurav Gogoi is reportedly trailing in the Jorhat constituency, where he sought to make his state assembly debut.

Meanwhile, AIUDF Chief and perfume tycoon Badruddin Ajmal is seeking a political comeback in Binnakandi after his Lok Sabha defeat in 2024, and Raijor Dal Chief Akhil Gogoi is locked in a tight battle to retain his Sibsagar seat.

The BJP-led alliance, which includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodo People’s Front (BPF), is currently projected to win between 88 and 100 seats. According to Axis My India exit polls, the BJP alone is expected to emerge as the single largest party with 70–80 seats. The Congress-led opposition alliance, despite fielding 99 candidates, appears to be struggling, with projections placing them between 24 and 36 seats.

This election marked a milestone in Assam’s democratic history with a record-breaking 85.91% voter turnout on April 9. Notably, female voter participation reached its highest-ever level at 86.5%, highlighting the significant role of women in shaping this year's mandate.

While identity, regional aspirations, and welfare schemes remained the core issues of the campaign, the early results indicate that the NDA's narrative has resonated deeply with the electorate across the 35 districts of the state. Final results are expected to be officially declared by late evening.
