'Thalapathy' Vijay’s TVK Stuns Rivals in Historic Election Debut
In a dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, superstar Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, popularly known as "Thalapathy," has led his political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to a stunning performance in the 2026 Assembly elections. As of 11:00 AM today, Monday (May 4), early trends show TVK leading in over 100 seats within the 234-member state assembly, signaling a powerful entry for the actor-turned-politician.
Vijay, who contested from two constituencies—Tiruchirappalli East and Perambur—appears to have successfully converted his massive cinematic fanbase into a decisive voting bloc. His famous dialogue from the hit film Pokkiri, "If I have decided for once, I, myself, will not listen to my words anymore," seems to have resonated with a public looking for a new political alternative.
Born in 1974, Vijay dominated the Tamil film industry for over three decades. After launching TVK in February 2024, he announced that his film Jana Nayagan would be his final project, dedicating himself entirely to public service.
His campaign, which kick-started on March 30, was built on a platform of secularism, social justice, and a two-language policy. Throughout his rallies, Vijay positioned the ruling DMK as his "political foe" and the BJP as his "ideological enemy," criticizing the former for alleged corruption and dynastic politics.
The path to this electoral success was not without significant challenges. In late 2025, Vijay’s political ambitions faced a severe setback following a tragic stampede at a TVK rally in Karur, which resulted in 41 deaths. The incident led to a CBI investigation and personal appearances by Vijay at their headquarters in Delhi. However, the party managed to regain momentum, particularly after the high-profile defection of veteran politician and nine-time MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan from the AIADMK to TVK.
The current leads suggest that Vijay’s vision of a "corruption-free, transparent, and accountable government" has struck a chord with the electorate, challenging the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.
If the current trends hold, the 2026 election will mark the most significant political transformation in Tamil Nadu since the era of M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa. Supporters have already begun celebrating across the state, hailing their "Thalapathy" as a formidable new force in Indian politics.
