Doly Begum has made history by becoming the first politician of Bangladeshi origin to be elected as a federal Member of Parliament (MP) in Canada.
The former New Democrat MPP for Scarborough Southwest secured a decisive victory in the federal by-election for the same riding on Monday (April 13), according to Canadian media reports.
Key Highlights:
- Begum received nearly 70 percent of the total vote.
- The turnout was relatively low, with only about one-third of eligible voters casting their ballots.
- Her win contributed to the Liberal Party securing a majority government with 174 seats.
Speaking at her victory celebration, Begum said: “Tonight, we celebrate something so powerful … a community coming together, putting aside their differences to choose hope, compassion, and progress.”
Begum first entered provincial politics in 2018 at the age of 29, becoming the youngest New Democrat in the party’s caucus. She was later appointed deputy party leader.
