From Rejected Thesis Student to Harvard Postdoc: Debasish’s Journey Inspires
The story of Debasish Sarkar, a former student of Dhaka University’s Physics Department, has become a powerful example of how academic grades do not define a person's future potential. Despite being denied a spot in his Master’s thesis group due to a CGPA below 3.0, Debasish is now starting a postdoctoral position at the prestigious Harvard University.
Dr. Kamrul Hassan Mamun, a Professor of Physics at Dhaka University, shared his student’s success in a social media post this Tuesday, March 24. He recalled how Debasish had a deep desire to conduct research but was officially ineligible because of his grades. Recognizing his passion, Dr. Mamun allowed him to join his research group unofficially, where Debasish eventually co-authored two research articles.
"I don't think anyone with big dreams should ever be judged by their current status or qualifications," Debasish told The Daily Campus. "In fact, no scale has yet been created to measure the hidden potential within a human being."
After overcoming his initial academic hurdles at Dhaka University, Debasish moved to the United States, where he completed his PhD at the University of Miami. Dr. Mamun noted that he woke up this morning to an email from Debasish sent from a Harvard University ID, confirming the start of his new role.
Dr. Mamun emphasized that a poor CGPA in school, college, or undergraduate studies is not the end of a journey, but can often be a new beginning. Debasish urged others to refrain from discouraging those who aim high, noting that someone written off today might do something incredible tomorrow.
