Six Sunnahs to Follow When It Rains – A Quick Guide
Rain is considered a great blessing in Islam, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught specific Sunnahs (recommended actions) to make the most of this mercy from Allah. Here are six key Sunnahs to practice during different stages of rainfall:
Ask Allah to Make the Rain Beneficial
As soon as it starts raining, say: اللّهُمَّ صَيِّـباً نَافِعاً (Allahumma sayyiban nafi‘an)
Meaning: “O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i)
Your sincere dua may turn potential harm into great good.
Stand Under the Rain to Receive Its Blessings
Expose part of your body or clothing to the raindrops.
Anas bin Malik (ra) reported: “While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, rain fell upon us. The Prophet ﷺ then exposed part of his garment so that rain fell on his body. When we asked why, he replied: ‘Because it has just come from the Exalted Lord.’” (Sahih Muslim)
This simple act connects us to Allah’s direct mercy.
Make Dua – It’s a Time When Supplications Are Accepted
Rain is one of the moments when duas are most likely to be answered.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Two supplications are not rejected: the dua after the Adhan and the dua during rain.” (Al-Hakim – Sahih)
Use this blessed time to ask for whatever your heart desires.
Seek Protection from Harmful Rain
If the rain becomes intense or heavy, say: اللّهُمَّ حَوالَيْنا وَلا عَلَيْنا (Allahumma hawalayna wa la ‘alayna)
Meaning: “O Allah, around us and not upon us.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This dua asks Allah to direct the rain beneficially without causing damage.
Glorify Allah When You Hear Thunder
When thunder is heard, stop talking and recite: يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ (Yusabbihu ar-ra‘du bihamdihi wal-mala’ikatu min khifatihi)
Meaning: “And the thunder exalts [Allah] with praise of Him – and the angels [as well] from fear of Him.” (Quran 13:13)
This reminds us of Allah’s power and majesty in nature.
Thank Allah After the Rain Stops
When the rain ends, say: مُطِرْنا بِفَضْلِ اللهِ وَرَحْمَتِه (Mutirna bifadli Allahi wa rahmatik)
Meaning: “We have received rain by the bounty and mercy of Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever says this is a believer in me and a disbeliever in the stars.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
This statement affirms tawhid and gratitude.
